Number Your AI's Replies
Difficulty: Low. Works in any AI chat, no technical background needed.
One of the first tricks I ever used when working with AI was this: I asked the AI to number every one of its replies.
Here’s the problem it solves. Get deep enough into any AI chat, and referencing something from ten replies back turns clumsy fast. You end up saying, “No, not when I said ‘this’ and you said ‘that.’ I mean when I said ‘that’ and you said ‘this.’” It’s a scavenger hunt through your own scrollback, and the AI is doing the same hunt on its end.
If you’ve ever had one of those going-nowhere arguments with your significant other, the ones that spiral into “well what about that time you said…” Yeah, that suddenly felt familiar, didn’t it? Long AI conversations do the exact same thing. Nobody wins a “but when you said” fight.
Most AI chat tools have a place to set instructions that apply across a whole conversation, sometimes called “custom instructions” or “system prompt.”
Add this: “Within this conversation, start every reply to me with a number, and increase it by one each time. Put it at the very front of your reply, like #001, then answer normally. Keep counting for the whole conversation. Next reply from you, start with #002, and so on.”
Once you’re fifteen exchanges deep, instead of the “but when you said” debate, just say: “Go back to what you said in #007” or “Let’s build on #013, not #011.” The AI knows instantly which reply you mean. So do you, without scrolling.
It sounds small. It changes how usable a long conversation actually is. Numbers are unambiguous in a way that “a few replies back” or “earlier you said” never is, especially once a conversation has looped through a topic twice.
One honest caveat: this trick lives inside a single, continuous conversation. If your AI chat resets, starts a new thread, or quietly compacts older messages once the conversation runs long (that silent-drift problem I wrote about in From Hard Stops to Silent Drift), the numbering can drift or reset too. It’s a fix for a smaller, far more common annoyance: pointing at the right reply, fast, in the conversation you’re already having.
Try it on your next chat. Ask the AI to start numbering from your very first message, then watch how much faster “go back to #009” works compared to describing it in a sentence.
